How to play Pictionary

You need two teams, a pen and paper (or a whiteboard) and this page.

1

Get a word

The drawer taps New word. Turn on Hide word so nobody else can see the screen.

2

Draw it

Start the timer and draw. No letters, numbers or talking allowed.

3

Guess and score

If the team guesses before time runs out, add a point. Then swap turns.

Tips for better drawing

Small habits that make teams guess faster.

Start with the big shape

Draw the main outline first, details later.

Use symbols

An arrow, a sun or a question mark can say a lot in one stroke.

Break it into parts

For long words, draw each part separately and let the team join them.

Skip if stuck

A new word is better than a lost minute.

More tools for your next game

Three different ways to find the right prompt. Each generator is free and works right in your browser.

Make every round more fun

A few simple twists can turn a familiar drawing game into a memorable one.

For families

Keep it quick and playful

Choose Easy words and 60-second rounds. Let younger players describe their drawing after the guesses are in.

For game nights

Try a speed round

Set the timer to 30 seconds and rotate drawers after every word. Short rounds keep everyone involved.

For a challenge

Raise the difficulty

Switch to Hard and give each team one chance to pass. The trickier prompts make for better stories later.

A few house rules

Agree on these before you start, so the game stays fair and easy to follow.

Keep the drawing, skip the clues.

There is no single perfect way to play. These simple rules work well for most groups, and you can adjust them to suit your players.

  • No speaking or acting out the answer while drawing.
  • Avoid writing letters, numbers, or the word itself.
  • One point for a correct guess before the timer ends.
  • Alternate teams and switch drawers each round.

Ready for another round?

Pick a category, challenge your friends, and see who can turn a few quick sketches into the winning guess.

Drawing prompts for every skill level

For a quick family round, begin with everyday objects such as a chair, apple or umbrella. When everyone is comfortable, try more detailed ideas such as a lighthouse, microscope or coral reef. Difficult Pictionary words reward creative clues rather than perfect artwork.

Use the difficulty buttons to switch between easy, medium and hard prompts. For a mixed group, Any level keeps rounds unpredictable. You can also select a specific theme if you are planning a classroom activity, birthday party or team game.

Looking for a ready-made Pictionary word list? Generate prompts one at a time and use the recent-word history to review your last turns. A dedicated printable-list mode is planned for a later release; the current tool does not claim to export lists.
